The Daughters of Mary Magdalene sponsored the 6th annual Savannah Juneteenth Festival on Saturday, June 21,
2014 (10am-6pm) in Wells Park. Juneteenth celebrates the liberation of the black race and affords African-Americans an opportunity to rebuild, re-educate, and reclaim our community. The Daughters of Mary Magdalene honor our ancestors and those who epitomize their spirit. The Honorees included Ms. Alfreda Mitchell (posthumously); Jazz Legend Mr. Ben Tucker (posthumously); Mr. Teddy Adams; Mr. E. Larry McDuffie; Mrs. Avis Myles; Travis ‘Chosen’ Jones; Former Harlem Globetrotter Mr. Larry ‘Gator’ Rivers and Dr. Stacy L. Henderson. The guest speaker was Attorney Albert Mitchell.
Honorees gathered at the historical First African Baptist Church on Franklin Square for the Juneteenth Prayer of Peace by Pastor Brian Wilborn. Afterwards, they were transported to Wells Park by limousine (courtesy of Above and Beyond Limousine Service) in a parade processional led by two of Savannah’s Motor Cycle Clubs: On Tha Move and The Presidential Ryderz. Upon arrival at Wells Park, a group of Savannah State University’s Navy ROTC Midshipmen escorted the Honorees to their seats. The festival featured a wide array of food, cultural and educational expressions, and entertainment. The event was coordinated by Ms. Marilyn Jackson and Mr. Ivan Cohen and sponsored by: Coca-Cola; Comcast, E-93 FM Radio Station, National Action Network, United Health Care, International Longshoreman Association (ILA), State Wide Insurance Co., Attorney Albert Mitchell, Dr. Bruce Mitchell, Church’s Chicken and David’s Crabhouse.
Savannah native and retired naval officer, Dr. Stacy L. Henderson, is the Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. National Queen, 2013-14 (MPMA). She hosted a ‘Meet & Greet’; donated school supplies to the children in attendance; and held a fundraiser to benefit the MPMA’s charge to build a Memorial Monument for the Original Montford Point Marines; the first 20,000 African-Americans that served during WWII and trained at the segregated Training Facility – Camp Montford Point – near Camp Lejeune, NC (from 1942-1949). Four of the Congressional Gold Medal recipients are Savannah residents: Mr. Samuel Berksteiner, Mr. Reginald Brown, Rev. Willie Outler and Ret. Lt. John A. White (the last surviving member of Savannah’s First Black Nine Police Officers). Stacy is active in the veteran and civilian communities. In April, She was inducted as a Chicago Defender 50 Women of Excellence–2014. Later this month she will attend the 2014 BET Awards in Los Angeles (Hosted by Chris Rock) and host a Red Carpet VIP After Party following the televised (live) awards show. In October she will attend Savannah’s 12th Annual Spirit of Excellence Business Awards Gala, where she makes her (namesake) Military Leadership Award and Academic Scholarship presentations annually. The Spirit of Excellence Business Awards Gala is produced and directed by Ms. Estelle Mannion, CEO – Stellar Productions Advertising, LLC.
